Summary:
The most influential Roman orator and senator met his demise at the hands of soldiers enlisted by the triumvirate, Octavius, Lepidus, and Antony, whom ordered his execution. Marcus Tullius Cicero had made the mistake of overstepping his bounds, with a sharp tongue had expressed his distaste of their tyrannical rule in fourteen Philippics. Not only had he lost his head but his hands as well, all to be displayed at the Rostra.
Having been struck down, decapitated and de-armed at his villa, Marcus Tullius Cicero's death is that of which is indicative of the power of the triumvirate, a triumvirate powerful enough to put out any opposition it faced. It also showed how the freedom of speech was something much more limited than what we living in the 21st century are accustomed to. It is believed that Antony's wife drove a knitting needle through Cicero's tongue for his outspoken nature. Talk about being tongue tied.
