Summary:
King Charles I was the monarch of England, Ireland, and Scotland from 1625 until his execution some 24 years later. He reigned under near constant power struggles between himself and the Parliamentary body which led to tensions between him and the general public as he constantly tried to override the Parliament's power which subsequently exacerbated his image as a power hungry absolutist tyrant.
Religious tension also lost him much of the trust his subjects had invested in him, as he failed to support Protestant forces in the Thirty Years' War and married a French Catholic, thus driving away many of his Calvinist supporters. The majority of his protestant subjects believed that he was bringing the Church of England much too close to Roman Catholicism.
Charles was executed by beheading, with one clean stroke, delivered by a masked executioner. The tyrant's head was displayed to those in the audience, though the usual phrase "Behold the head of a tyrant" was not uttered. His head was later sewn back onto his body so that his family could pay their respects during his funeral.
